The purpose of writing papers in English 101 is NOT about the actual paper you produce. It’s not about the PRODUCT. IT’s about the PROCESS and learning the process. Paradox is that if you engage in the PROCESS of writing Essay #1 for the SAKE of LEARNING the Process, the product will be probably the best thing you’ve ever written.
Invention— How you get from having NO idea to having an IDEA.
Opening Freewrite: Write about a time (or times) that you went from having NO idea to having an idea. Your real life. Your academic life. Math. Writing. Science.
In an academic setting, going from having NO idea to having an IDEA means thinking carefully about what the teacher is asking you to do.
Synonym: Pre-Writing– PARADOX– When you don’t know what to write, you have to write. To get ideas about what to write, you have to write.
How You Do it: Brainstorm. Freewrite. Make lists.
Qualities: Messy. Not Linear. Expansive. The “wrong” idea may be the best idea (or get you to a better idea). Editor OFF.
Specific Invention/Brainstorming Activity (last ten minutes of class):– Write out a list or a grid of your grade levels (first, second third) and then categories (ex. “reading,” “writing,” “math,” “essays,” “Science,” “Political science,” etc.)
